„Queering the Crip, Cripping the Queer“ was the first international exhibition addressing the intersectionality of historical, cultural und political aspects of queerness and disability. 20 international artists were part of this exhibit, showcasing pieces that relate to the very timely topic of this exhibition. Furthermore, selected pieces from the Prinzhorn Collection were part of the exhibition, as well as introductions to the icons of the queer/disabled art world.

Das Werk // The Artwork
Side note: My interpretation of the peoples’ genders, as depicted in the images does not pretend to be the genreal consensus nor does it have to be absolutely correct. From a modern, queer point of view it is important to not that the binary categories of male and female aren’t adequate, and since the artwork focuses on trans identities, a non-binary identity or other gender identities that fall under the trans umbrella can’t be ruled out for the depicted persons.
For people who are interested or might need a general image description: you’ll find them (in German) in the ALT-text of each picture, before I then dive into an in depth analysis of the three images, as is the focus of this text.
Bild I. // Image I.
The rainbow-coloured stripes covering the eyes of the two people is another, very abstract detail, in this image. It almost looks like someone took a piece of Washi-tape and taped it over their faces. It also leaves a lot of room for interpretation. First and foremost it indicates that both people depicted are members of the LGBTQ+ community. It could also be interpreted in a way that both of them aren’t officially out yet and therefore want to censor their identities. Furthermore, the rainbow stripes could also bee seen as the „queer lens“ that the two of them view the world through. Finally, the taped over faces could stand for the process of labelling the two people as queer/members of a specific group of the LGBTQ+ community.
Present colours are the red of the pillow and the blue of the wall. The red of the pillow might stand for the love and lust the two people feel for each other, while the blue of the wall might stand for intelligence and further pushes the belief that the two people are university students. Blue also stands for trust, which indicates that the two of them aren’t strangers to each other. Furthermore, this trust creates a known environment, a safe space.
Last but not least we will have a look at the gender identities and ethnic backgrounds of the two persons. Both of them can be read as female, or femme presenting, judging by their chests, faces, and hair styles. When looking at their skin colours, it is obvious that they come from a latinx/Black background.

Coming back to the colour symbolism, we once again find the red in the rose tattoo of the one person, symbolising love and lust. The rusty brown of the window frame could also be seen as a type of red, and through its high percentage of orange mixed into it, it radiates warmth and enthusiasm, which seems fitting for the two people making out.
Now let us have a look at some details, the depiction of gender and the situation depicted in this image.
The upper bodies of both people depicted create the belief that they are male or masc presenting individuals. This is further emphasised by their head-shapes, their faces, beards and hair styles. We can’t see a lot of their bodies from the waste down, since they are covered by clothes and the window sill.
The person in the front has one hand curled up in a fist, which immediately draws attention. In our society, fists are often associated with violence, but in this case it is rather a depiction of lust than violence. Both people are People of Colour, judging by their skin tones. The way they have positioned themselves in front of the window, in full view of the people looking in from the outside, lets us believe that they want to be seen. Just like in the first image of this artwork, it remains unclear if this couple just finished having sex or if they just started getting intimate. But seeing that they are still wearing some clothes, the latter might be the case.
Bild III. // Image III.
One thing that stands out is the fact that the dildo the two are using is the same colour as the sunset that can be seen in the window in the background. Sunsets show the transition between day and night and there is a lot of symbolism to be found in them. Generally, people feel like sunsets are a romantic setting. Sunsets are often associated with love and positive feelings, but we could also interpret them in a different way. For example, the sun setting on a specific phase in life, transitioning into the next. Romance, love and positive experiences can be related to sexual practices or sextoys, as can be seen in this particular image.
Fazit // Conclusion

Additionally, the three-piece-artwork leaves room for even more interpretation. The number three is known as the number of luck and success in numerology; all the couples in the images seem to be happy and content. We also encounter the number three within the images themselves. For example the triangular shapes that can be found in the tattoos, mountains, the flags, the tip of the obelisc.
When it comes to the composition of the images, the position of the beds, the window and the people are important to point out. In both images in which the beds are visible, the beds make up the lower part of the image. They fill the whole lower parts of the images and the headboard is always on the left side of the people on the bed. This way the bed draws attention to itself, but never steals the show for the persons on it. The windows in image two and three are both positioned in the centre of the images, only in the first picture the window is on the right hand side. Through the central position of the windows, viewers get to focus more on the view and the action behind the windows. In the second image, the main action is taking place behind the window. The view from the window in image three might therefore be interpreted as more important than the view to be seen from the window in image number one.
Another aspect that suggests importance is the recurrence of the colour red, in different shades. As I said before, red stands for love and lust – which is both theme and motif of the three artworks. Roses as tattoos are also a recurring thing to be seen in all three images. In the first image, the rose appears are a waterlily, in the other two as „proper“ roses. The rose is also a symbol of love and lust. Waterlilies on the other hand are associated with optimism, purity and beauty. Just like the tattoos, top-surgery scars are also a motif that appears in several of the images, even though it’s just in two out of three.
When it comes to the depiction of deafness, it can be pointed out that in first image the flag of the university for deaf people heavily suggests that the people in the image are deaf. In the second and third image, we can’t see/tell if one of both of the people depicted are deaf. It can only be suggested by the context of the artwork as a whole and by the context of the exhibition, or rather the artist himself. The fact remains that deafness isn’t a visible disability and therefore might also not be visible in all of the images.
Finally, I want to point out that the eyes of the people in all of the images can’t really be seen, because they are either closed, only seen from the side, or covered by a rainbow or sunglasses. On the one hand, the viewer is never directly looked at and therefore involved in the action depicted, on the other hand this creates some kind of anonymity.
All in all it can be said that the artwork „Quarantine Bedroom Action“ by Kah Mendoza Weethee is more than just an aesthetically successfully executed piece of art that invites the viewer to interpret what they see. The room for interpretation gives the artwork even more power. Important to underline is also the socio-political intention of Kah, consciously depicting sexual practices between queer, deaf, trans people. If you ever have the chance to see this artwork live, I highly recommend you do so. Otherwise, I also want to encourage you to follow the artist on Instagram.
